Thakkali Kuzhambu | Thakkali Kulambu | Tomato Saar Recipe

December 1, 2015 36 Comments

I have been on a grand cooking spree over the past couple of weeks. The focus has mostly been South Indian recipes, especially new rasam, sambar, and kuzhambu recipes which I haven’t tried before.

This Thakkalu Kuzhambu or Tomato Saar Recipe is as delicious as it is simple. I love anything tomato-flavoured and especially when it’s kuzhambu with coconut ground in it, it’s extra special for me. This Tomato Kulambu goes great with rice and some chips. You can add a dry vegetable curry on the side, like a betroot thoran or a beans mezhukkupuratti which would just take your meal to the next level.

So now let’s check out how to make Thakkali Kuzhambu using this easy recipe from Arch.

Now onto the Tomato Saar Recipe.

Thakkali Kuzhambu | Tomato Saar Recipe
Serves 4
Recipe source: Arch

Ingredients:
4 ripe tomatoes
3-4 green chillies
1 cup grated coconut
A few curry leaves
1 red chilli
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
A pinch of hing / asafoetida
1.5 tsp salt
2 tbsp grated jaggery

How to make Thakkali Kuzhambu:

1. Blanch the tomatoes in hot water. Peel the skin off and keep aside to cool. Reserve the water for later use.

2. Grind the green chillies, coconut, and tomatoes in a blender till smooth

3. Add the reserved water to the tomato-coconut paste and bring to boil in a pan.

4. Add salt and jaggery and cook down until desired consistency is reached. If the kuzhambu is too thick, you can add more water to begin with.

5. For tempering, heat oil in a small pan and add mustard seeds, broken red chilli, curry leaves and asafoetida.

6. Dunk the seasoning over the thakkali kuzhambu and serve with hot rice

Wat I feel is blogging every day recipes doesnt matter, u surely will have one variation shown in ur version which will be helpful for others.

I like the easy versions like marie biscuit dessets, gothuma roti, choco cookies, masala kulipaniyaram etc……and thats the reason why many recipes in my blog are from here.Infact many of my blogger/non-blogger friends even asked me Who is this Nags, so many of ur recipes are from hers?! 🙂

Yeah, these days hvent seen any comments from you……?! For the template and look change, u can do it lil by lil so that u dont feel the strain which is what I m doing right now 🙂

I know exactly what you mean Nags, especially about that last bullet. I have completely stopped looking at my reader. I really want to get back into it though, as I enjoy browsing other blogs.

I try and post a lot of non-run of the mill recipes, but when I look through my stats, the traditional ones are the most popular, especially over time. So that means many people out there are searching for regular every day recipes. So my resolution is to post more of those 🙂

You know, I have to say I'm guilty to every one fo your 3 opening statements at this post!
But I'm not sure how to solve them. And my blog also needs a make-over very badly.
You're lucky you have only 2 posts in your drafts. I have so many!!!

    Nags

I love your recipes, the step-by-step and everyday. Because your "everyday recipe" is NOT my "everyday recipe", it is a variation for me and seeing them gives me an idea of what other "home food" is out there.

Take this Tomato Saar, never had it.

I am going through a different set of problems that doesn't get me blogging at all. The template factor is common – I don't know what I should do about the header but I have got tired of looking at my present one:). Since my son will not eat anything other than rasam, sambar and dal I really am not motivated to try any other gravy – which will only mean I cook two things instead of one!!

Umm… the rant became a long one I guess but it did lighten me up a bit:). My MIL makes a similar saar and it tastes great with rice. Maybe my son will like this! Your whole setting looks wonderfully cheery!

When I bloghop, I usually look for simple recipes than some exotic ones. come to think of it, who really has the time to toil in the kitchen. We look for something that makes a quick hearty meal. your recipes are just fine. I love your everyday recipes. Keep this going .. BTW I want some more authentic kerala veggie dishes from yu ..

Hey! Hi! Nice page you have here, including the photographs. Looks delicious!

I came across your blog when I was looking at my earlier blogpage (caniwrite.blogspot). I saw you commented on a couple of my posts then, but I must have missed yours, since I had shifted over to wordpress. Just thought I should return the effort you made. Am quite late, I know, but here's a start!:)

    i really like this blog.
i've just moved into a place with a usable kitchen and am slowly learning my way around it.
when its too late to make long distance calls to much amused parents/grandparents/other indulgent family blogs like yours are a lifesaver.
(especially when hunting for a simple rasam recipe- because on some days only rasam will do)
    🙂
