Coming to think of it, this is very similar to vazhakka thoran which I have posted before. Raks and Jeyashri came over for a potluck lunch one day and Raks brought her roasted vazhakkai. It was delicious. She said the recipe is in her blog so I checked the next day. This is the closest one I saw so I followed that recipe, making small changes here and there to suit my taste.
Vazhakkai Roast Masala / Raw Banana Roasted in Masala
Serves 4
Ingredients:
2 of
vazhakkai / raw banana
1/4 tsp of
salt
Grind Coarsely Together:
2 of
dry red chillies
1 tsp of
jeera / cumin
1 tsp of coriander powder / malli podi
1/2 cup of
grated coconut
4 shallots / ulli / chinna vengaayam
A pinch of
turmeric powder
For Tempering:
1 tbsp of
oil
1/4 tsp of
mustard seeds
1/4 tsp of
urad dal
1 strand of
curry leaves
How I Made It:
1. Peel and cut the raw bananas into small cubes.
2. Grind together the specified ingredients, without any water.
3. Heat oil in a pan and add the ingredients under tempering. When the mustard seeds pop and the urad dal turns a golden brown, add the cut raw bananas. Mix well and roast on low flame until almost soft. Keep stirring to avoid burning. This will take about 5-7 mins.
4. Add the ground masala paste with some salt and mix well. Keep on low flame and cook till the ingredients come together and the raw bananas are cooked through.
Serve with rice and any kozhambu of choice.

A must-try for all vazhakkai lovers!
Keep stirring until all the ingredients you have added stick together and look almost done. I know it's hard to know what I mean if you are new to (indian) cooking but I am not sure how to explain this better. just check to see if the raw bananas are cooked and soft and you should be ok.
Thanks for this recipe but I have a query…. what do you mean by "cook till the ingredients come together" . Please clarify.
been a bit caught up with work and travel. updating soon 🙂
Everything alright ?? Been so long since you ve posted..looking fwd to one soon !! Also long since you ve done a baked goodie ! pls do and tc..
Im not a big fan of raw banana except in the fried form… but this sure does look delicious!
I am so intrigued by the texture of this dish – I've never eaten or cooked with raw bananas before. I hope you don't mind, but I've shared this in my Friday Food Fetish blog post…
We normally make this dish with dry roasted ingredients. Adding tamarind is someting that I do, when I cook the vegetables in tamarind water.I try and cut my vazhakkai pieces small so they roast soon! Lovely shots nags!

raw banana is Arvind's favorite and I usually make it somewhat like yours but mine gets soggy. Will follow your recipe next time .. it looks lovely.

Thank you Alaiyo! 🙂
Your photos are so crisp and clean! It makes me want to try the recipe. Your earlier post about buying dishes and such for your photos was inspiring as well. I love blogs that give me new ideas. I'm awed by bloggers who present fresh, exciting material on your blog. Your content is exciting and fresh and I love visiting.

That looks yummm…we usually make the thoran, must try this.
Just mouthwatering…looks so easy to prepare and delicious!
This sounds yummm… I've bookmarked this, hope I can try it tomorrow itself.
Something i would love. I liked the way you didn't peel off the skin completely . I like retaining the whole skin too, but peel off a thin sliver when its blackened a bit.
Hi Nags, knowing that you are part of the free spirit blogger – and realising that you are soon to clone a coffee shop drink – has me excited. I am new to Singapore (if that is what you would call someone who has been here 7 months) and I have been to places that you reviewed and I have been extremely happy with the suggestions. I can't wait to see which coffee shop drink you plan to clone.
