Another Giveaway - A Book This Time!

**Lucky winner of the book is Sharmilee :) Sharmilee, please get in touch with me at naagu.v[at]gmail.com at the earliest**

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had a splendid two weeks in India this time. I went to Chennai, Bombay and Kottayam, stayed with family on all three occasions and was pampered beyond what I felt I deserved at 27! A highlight of the trip was this book I was reading all through it - Don't Lose Your Mind, Lose Your Weight by Rujuta Diwekar.

Rujuta is Kareena Kapoor's dietician and usually celebrity endorsed products get ignored by me. However, this book was recommended by Marie, a regular reader of this blog, when she saw my 3-day diet post and how I struggled through it. I just can't do diets.

I read this book in about 5 days and its probably the only non-fiction book that has had me this hooked. Far from a diet regime, what she gives is an insight into eating right. There are no 'don'ts' in the book and that works perfect for me.

To share the goodness, I am giving away a copy of Rujuta Diwekar's Don't Lose Your Mind, Lose Your Weight. To enter the giveaway, leave a comment in this blog post and tell me what you think of diets, names of any diets you have tried or about the book, in case you have already read it, before September 4th, Friday, midnight Singapore time.

Winner will be chosen randomly and I will ship worldwide. Good luck!

  1. I am not a fan of diets and believe in healthy eating as a way of life! Thanks for a chance to win!

  2. I guess I am like you... I cannot do diets... I have stopped trying... I just eat lots and lots of fruits... easy for me since I am a fruit maniac.. :)

Glad you had a nice time in India! :)

  3. Gosh! another giveaway??! I don't have any luck to win ur raffle...but still...trying. ;) I never have had followed any systematic diet or diet plan and now I am curious to read this book though. I don't think I can find a copy here. I am going to call my sis in India. Thanks for letting know. :)

  4. OMG - I've been wanting this book for ages! It's hard because I can't anywhere that will ship this to Australia :( So extra incentive for me to enter :P

Diets...well let's just say we have a special relationship. Up until a year ago I never dieted, ate what I wanted and managed to retain a size 8 figure (a bloody miracle considering the amount of chocolate I ate!!). However, I was eating vegetarian food at home and walking everywhere so my diet/exercise was balanced.

Fast forward a year and I swear I would have tried every diet under the sun!! From the Lemon Detox diet, to the 3-day one (which didn't work for me!), to a 7-day no-carbs challenge (which worked to help me lose 1.2 kgs in a week!) to just plain eating healthy and going to the gym.

This book, while I have heard is simple is great for people wanting something to reinforce basic eating/exercise rules.

    Thanks for the competition!

  5. First time here commenting for a giveaway....I dont really believe in dieting instead try to take healthy foods and loads of fresh juices.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Diet is the one thing I cannot and will not do. Maybe it is all the "religious" fasting that we see here that has put me off it for good.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I cannot do dieting but still have a control on eating.. but if I see any delicious home cooked food I will eat....more. If I feel heavy will keep walking in the corridor for sometime before sleeping.. Its better to eat what our stomach needs and not over it and why to diet....Being healthy is good.

    This book seems pretty interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  8. i was skeptical when someone gave me this book...i dont like celebrity endorsed programs, especially on fitness.... this one was a nice read... and full of practical no nonsense pointers..thats what i like best

    ReplyDelete
  9. Have never believed in diets because I can hardly stay without cravings. I started the Cabbage soup diet once and ended the diet in 3 days instead of 7 days!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Its quite a long i tried out diet, really hard to follow each and everyday that particular diet rules which was really a tough task for me, I usually say that live to eat but not eat to live..Definitely we can follow the diet if we use less oil and start eating some nutritious and protein packed dishes.. Somehow am curious to go through this book also am very interested to get this book from you..

    ReplyDelete
  11. I can exercise but I never can follow a diet .. I once tried the 7 day diet. I lost 2 kilos in a weeks time But I could never get myself to try that again. Yes, I did hear about Rujuta's book long ago .. looking fwd to going through it

    ReplyDelete
  12. What a coincidence! I just bought this book last evening and my brother and I have been reading it - I still haven't come to the diets portion and I'm yet to form an opinion about it. It's funny and raises a few laughs.

(Don't need to tell you I'm not entering the competiton. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  13. Sra, if I pick your name out of the hat, then you are getting the book. Give it to a friend or something, ok? :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well I did a half yearly diet to loose all my baby fat that was around for last 26 years or so. I have lost 20kgs in 8 months ...
My diet plan: a roti and a bowl of daal/kadhi for lunch and dinner
Murmura/popcorn/nimbu paani/buttermilk/green tea/black tea (all without suger) to satisfy the cravings in between.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ashley! That's awesome!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ashley has done great with her wt. loss.
but that kind of regime needs a lot of motivation (to be away from your fave things basically).
i tried south beach n and atkins in the past and lost about 4-5 kgs within weeks ..but any small treat with family or guests make it go haywire....result: i gained all the lost wt. again.
now as you see on my blog...the selfimprovised diet is working for me, slow n steady, i'd call it an Indianised version of macrobiotic..........lots of fiber and i am not giving up my fave foods n have them occasionally , in moderation.

    ReplyDelete
  17. If you ask me now then i dont diet other than avoid eating fatty and oily food but 3 yrs back i used to diet, morning light breakfast with milk and khakhra or kurmura, afternoon lunch with 3 roti, sabji and bowl of pulses, evening snacks usually kurmura or sometimes salted chana and night was usually light with a bowl of salads, soup and fruits :) ..all this with 5 days gym :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. forgot to tell that i lost 10 kilos from nov. last year to april this year and gained 4 kilos during marriage of my brother , but lost 6 kilos again till date.......that 4 kilo loss was within a week n 6 kilo loss took me 2 months....may be it's helpful for somebody...he he..

    ReplyDelete
  19. sangeeta and parita, very very impressive!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. As Sangeetha said, Ashley has done really good in losing all that weight... Right now I am trying to diet to lose all the fat I gained during pregnancy :-( And its real hard.. to cook all the goodies for your family, and you stay away from all that.... Sometimes I can't resist and give away, but I have set a goal and I need to reach that.. God help me with this :-)

    ReplyDelete
  21. ok people...the day u get ur hands on this book and start using it, ur going to hug nags until she cant breathe :)
trust us. this works. because its not even a friggin diet.
and yep, u get to eat all u want. only, u eat more wisely and start listening to ur body.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I've heard so much about this book..

Last year from Jan-June,I was on a strict[on second thoughts,it wasn't so strict] diet regime and I lost 10 kgs, after I stopped dieting,I gained back 2 kgs,so all in all 8 kg weight loss.I am not dieting now,but the weight stays the same.I do brisk walking 6 days a week and occasionally indulge in sweets and junk food.I am off-rice since last one month and I am doing pretty well till now.I do have rice-based stuff for breakfast-dosa,idly,puttu etc but thats it.No rice for lunch or dinner.Though by itself I haven't lost any more weight, but I haven't gained any too, with one too many sweet indulgences.

    How was your vacation??

    ReplyDelete
  23. This book is brilliant. Bought it last week - very my kinda-book, very practical - i cannot deprive myself of any type of food and if I tell myself I'm dieting, I just feel hungry all day !! This book is great...Did you try out the plan in it Nags ? It really works - i have stopped drinking tea in the morning - I thought I'd die without it, but very much alive and kicking...I do the in-between snacking too - its been a week - I've lost a kilo and thrilled about it :) brilliant giveaway

    ReplyDelete
  24. So you had a lovely vacation. :)

Diets and me, not a good combination. :(
But I know from experience, sensible eating, sensible portions and moderate exercise (walking is fine) can keep off the weight and is sustainable.
Short term restrictive diets (Ionly think about what I'm not eating!) and the gym (not my favourite past-time) don't work for me. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  25. I need the book..!!..:-)...I have already lost my mind trying to loose weight..:--)..have been overweight almost throughout my life.,.except for a few phases in between ( where looks mattered more than good food..;-))..
here I go again..third time in the raffle..
    wish me luck,
    Sonia

    ReplyDelete
  28. I guess diets usually don't work with me but I did try a few while I was overweight!Did Atkins and South Beach and of course exercise with it.I guess I got so depressed with all of it that I ended up overeating..Now I don't follow any specific diet but control portion sizes and use veg oil spray, no sugar, no sweets!I guess this works well with me.You must be wondering what I do with all the food I make for the blog...My husband!!LOL I eat, but in controlled portions!

    ReplyDelete
  29. err ...now..
you sis lost solid 6-7 kgs in 6 months time and the whole wt bounced back in a month..(when her sis cooked her to glory) while in KTM...pampers...sister food...pampers..
I will get one copy and follow you...read all the way next time to KTM ;)

    ReplyDelete
  30. This book does sound very interesting...actually I dont believe in dieting that much...especially like diets for a couple of days...just following proper portion control with eating healthy foods that contain complex carbohydrates and low fat worked wonders for me...I lost about 20 pounds in 2 months and I am still maintaining a healty weight...I guess this book is a good read though :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. well, I always wanted to get a hand on this book, but never could.2 months before my wedding I weighted 59 kgs and on the day of my marriage, I weighed 50 kgs (perfect for my height). Thanks to my mom, this was her plan (as she was against me dieting). I promised I would burn 500 calorieds in the gym everyday. I said NO to sweets, butter, cream, ghee and deep fried foods.
Morning, I would have whole wheat cereal with fruits. For lunch box to office, I would take vegetables, 2 sukha rotis and dal. Food was prepared in olive oil. For tea, I would have green tea and one orange. For dinner, I would have a thin soup (without cream) and sprouted dal salad (with lime juice as dressing).
I felt well fed and light. My skin did not lose its glow (as I has fruits, sprouts and vegetables). This is my story. I maintain this diet, but started to have rotis for dinner and some rice for lunch. I have totally avoided rice for dinner.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I generally do not diet. I do exercise. But I did try out the General Motors diet for a lark, because it said that at the end of the week one would lose craving for sweets. I have a terrible sweet tooth. And the diet did nothing to curb the craving for sweets!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Its very tough for me to follow diets...I used to try GM diet ....but i used to cry while following it...Whwnever i see cakes and chocolate....thats it end off dieting:)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I've never bothered with diets - the thought of having to stay away from food is just NOT acceptable - LOL.
If I've ever tried to lose weight its through exercise, and I feel healthier that way, rather than the crazed deptivation feeling that comes with not being able to eat what you like.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Diets - Well..havent tried any diet per se..But off late i have started to watch what i eat, avoid junk and eat more good fats like nuts etc. Also twice or thrice a week i just eat a fruit and yogurt for dinner or just some salad..no carbs in the night.also i made it a point to eat oats for breakfast everyday.Although i havent lost any weight , people tell me i look as though i lost weight , YAY !

  36. Hi Nags!
I seriously have tried so many diets. Latest being the South Beach diet and I have the reputation of not staying through the regime for not more than 3 days , still I never die of the enthusiasm to start with another diet program. The best thing is did lose few pounds because of the running and swimming I did simultaneously :-) I have finally arrived at the conclusion that diet should be a way of lifestyle and not cutting down on some things you crave for. Exercise and healthy food will make us fit and fine.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hi nags,
i too cant do diets .... Really difficult .... Some time back after my delivery tried not to eat sweets & oily foods. Eat only chappati's & not rice ... But i could not do for more time ... I started doing some excercies which made me fit .....

  38. Hi Nags,

  39. Love a diet book giveaway! I would love to do a diet, but for me, it seems virtually impossible for no reason in particuar. However, would be interesting to read a book like this. I like your review & often wonder if non-fiction books can keep us glued to their pages. Thanks for the parcel...now first let me use that 'very happily', and then will hope I win this book to knock off calories!

  40. Nags,
I tried to do some weight loss after getting a book "Get Bikini Fit In 4 Weeks or Less" from a friend of mine. I tried following the regime for sometime and then just left it. The book was great and really helped me not on loosing weight, but to revitalise my skin :).
But now I have started working out again, and this time am eagerly wanting to loose some abs fat :).

    ReplyDelete
  41. Looks like practically everyone has gone on a diet at some point in time or the other. Some of these stories are very inspiring :)

  43. Hi Nags..
    Wow another giveaway.
i had always struggled with my weight, you may call it genetic or what they call 'khata-pete ghar ki'..which means born in a marwari family where every bowl of dal will have own tempering of 2tsp of ghee ' for taste'. But soon during my college days i realized how unhealthy food intake i am having..and very much like hindi movies..'bahot der ho chuki thi'.
so i first started to starve myself..as a result felt weak and look pale. Then my Dad introduced me to Yoga, which was gud i even looked slim and felt fresh all day ...
and than i got married to a foodie like me ...
and at last came the main villain in my movie 'thyroid'...from the day i got it ..i keep on putting weight.
Done several diets..GM, Detoxy and many more, the end result always came as big disappointment with only few grams less in my weighing scale :(.
Anyways i am doing good now with full medication and now trying another diet of not eating carb at night :).
Hopefully will lose few pounds this time....HAVE TO BE OPTIMISTIC..right :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hey

None of the GM , detox stuff works. Not even having lime + warm water in the morning ;-)

Eat every two hours - small meals - avoid fried stuff and sweets + workout everyday (Walk / swim ) - this is working for me !

    ReplyDelete
  45. I have heard about this book, and was tempted to buy......but still have not purchased it....
I have successfully tried dieting and have reduced weight as well.....but have gain back those oodles of fat again....
I have tried low fat diet, Have tried low carb - Atkins......
But diet is not the only solution, excercise is a must for keeping oneself fit and increase ur metabolism
Avoid skipping meals and have food five times a day at regular intervals.....
In past there were times I was a Gym maniac, you need to control even on over exercising as it may harm ur muscles internally....
    Swimming is the best excercise.....

    ReplyDelete
  46. All great tips!

Sonal - I have thyroid problem too. Its hard, I know. Good luck girl :) And yes, be optimistic, always. It helps a LOT!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Comments were very useful Nags. I am currently on some diet with no name or the one I have devised myself by reading blogs, and many other articles. You have to wait for another month to know the weight loss happened. It is difficult to go on a diet and maintain it in later part of life. Breakfast : 1/2 cup of sprouts and milk, Lunch : Salad (fruit and vegetable), Dinner : 2 chapathis and buttermilk. In between almonds (21 per day) and green tea with ginger(1")+honey (half tsp)+lemon (juice from half lemon) paste and lemon verbena.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hi Nags =)

Well I'll just share with you weight loss tips that work for me, and are quite easy to do. first of all, drink as much water as you humanely can. First thing you do in the morning when you wake up, is to drink a glass of water. Make it a point to drink a whole glass of water before your lunch, and even more during your lunch. You'll be surprised, but most of the time we aren't really hungry (strictly speaking), all we are is thirsty. If you get sick of water, figure out very-low-calorie ways of flavouring it up such as squeezing lemon in it, or making tea without the milk.

next tip has to do with the size of your plate. start eating in smaller plates, trust me, you'll feel just as full with much less food.

and another thing is to replace your lunch or your dinner with fruits. i mean, cut out all carbs, all fat for that one meal and eat just fruits and veggies. (steam the veggies if you must, but don't stir fry them or anything oily) eat enough apples, and you'll overcome the hunger. and one last thing is to always cut your food into small pieces, that way it will take you long to eat it and therefore you will feel like you have ate a lot.

hope all of that helps you, like it helped me! :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Sounds like a great book! For me only a balanced diet (smaller portions, no snacking) works with a little bit of exercise. I find that I can't do any special diets as I can't limit what kinds of food I can eat.

    ReplyDelete
  50. hmmmm me 2 in ....i m a foodie nd foodie means weight gain so...but this time desperate to loose :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oooh this is the book you were talking about, let me try my luck too... :) What do I think of diets? Always used to think diets were too tough till I went on South Beach Diet. Now I am a believer :) I have much more to say on the topic, but won't take up your comment space. Just ship it, I mean first pull my name out of that hat and then ship it ;)

    ReplyDelete
  52. oh me me! what do I think of diets? hate them :))

  54. Nags, this is awesome!
All the times when I have successfully lost weight, it was with exercise. When I try "dieting", it doesnt work for me.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I don't actually believe any kind of special diet as each of us have a different body frame. "Eating right (smaller quantities at equal intervals of time), drinking plenty of water and doing enough physical activity " can keep anybody healthy!..:)

  56. Hello,
Your blog is well timed. Am presently doing my post graduation studies in fitness, nutrition and sports science. So you have indirectly given me an opportunity to impart some basic knowledge.

Firstly, "DIET" is a highly misinterpreted word. Every human being is on a diet. We survive because of the nutrients our diet provides. So one needs to specify if he/she is on a weight-loss diet or a weight-gain diet or any other specific diet.

Secondly, the diet one consumes need to have 5 basic food groups, namely, Cereals and Products( one needs to avoid processed products as they are devoid of essential nutrients and fiber), Pulses and Legumes ( both whole or split pulses), Milk and Meat Products ( if a person is a non-vegetarian, he/she needs to restrict consumption of milk and milk products coz both the sources are very high in protein), Vegetables and Fruits and lastly, Fats and Sugars(one should never chuck this last food group completely from your diet, coz some amount of it is required by the body, unless one has been advised by the doctor. Fats provide essential fatty acids whereas sugar is a source of energy)

To sum it up, one needs to have a "BALANCED DIET"

Also,a supervised exercise programme, yoga and a bit of spirituality, can surely make a lot of difference.

  57. We had to change our diet when my husband fell sick with some food allergies, acidity and on top he was diagnosed to have high cholesterol(300+). One of his friend suggested that having oat meal for breakfast and dinner helps in reducing cholesterol levels. So this is what me and my husband are doing these days

Oat Meal with milk and a teaspoon of sugar for breakfast and dinner
Rice or rotis for Lunch, with some vegies or legumes
Seasonal Fruits in between meals. (Oranges, watermelon, honey dew, cantaloupe etc..)

We eat regular meals on Saturday and Sundays but still we eat oat meal for breakfast. Sometimes I do reward ourselves with some pancakes or Indian snacks. I feel so fresh at work without a sense of starvation. We do some workouts, breathing exercise, Sudarshan kriya(AOL) and play badminton to compliment it. I feel that I am losing pounds and my pants are the proof for it :-)

I feel a huge difference when I am not following this regime. My stomach feels bloated and I hate that. I am not saying that this is a perfect diet to lose weight, but following it makes me FEEL GREAT.

  59. hi nags, it was quite interesting to read about everybody's diet procedures and i thought this was a good post which has given everybody an opportunity to know what to do and what not to do during dieting and lots of ideas has been shared here for everybody's requirements, coming back to the post, actually i really do not do any dieting, as such, i eat what all i like, do a lot of walking around, i keep an eye of what i am using and how much, i don't get tempted by anything and i don't indulge in oily foods i do eat them with limitations, totally i don't do any dieting, i love eating lot of veggies and fruits, try using more in my cooking, i use lot of veggies in one single dish right from upma to any curry or gravy i make and love eating all kind of nuts, i really do not have anything to say about dieting, but the book might be quite interesting to go through...

  60. Hi Nags,
That's a nice thought to give away a book to your readers.
It's high time I started a diet routine. It will be nicer if I get to win the raffle. :D
The only diet routine I have followed so far is, carrying a roti and boiled vegetables to work. This happened a couple of yrs back. :D
I used to carry 4 to 5 colors of vegetables which is recommended for good health.
As of now, I don't follow any diet.

  62. I hate doing diets. I love to eat & also to experiment new dishes. I tried GM diet long back & had reduced 2kgs too. After that never tried any diet. I used to hit gym after my delivery. I reduced 6kilos in 4 months time (just by excersing.., absolutely no change in diet. I used to eat fried foods too). But, after coming to Singapore..., no diet.., no gym. I always cook what I need & enjoii eating them :)

  63. I've tried it all - strict grapefruit diets, cabbage soup diet, The Diet Centre (900 calories/day) and more successfully Weight Watchers. WW seems to be the best way to lose and maintain weight. It's about a committment to balance in your life. That's the true way to keep at it - just balance the good with the bad. Now I just try to maintain, cutting back when I hit that number on the scale that scares me and enjoying life in moderation (not always, but most of the time).

i had always struggled with my weight, you may call it genetic or what they call 'khata-pete ghar ki'..which means born in a marwari family where every bowl of dal will have own tempering of 2tsp of ghee ' for taste'.

  79. I generally do not diet. I do exercise. But I did try out the General Motors diet for a lark, because it said that at the end of the week one would lose craving for sweets. I have a terrible sweet tooth. And the diet did nothing to curb the craving for sweets!

  88. What a coincidence! I just bought this book last evening and my brother and I have been reading it - I still haven't come to the diets portion and I'm yet to form an opinion about it. It's funny and raises a few laughs.

(Don't need to tell you I'm not entering the competiton. :-)

  91. Diet is the one thing I cannot and will not do. Maybe it is all the "religious" fasting that we see here that has put me off it for good.
