Nadan Pacha Thakkali Thoran/Raw Green Tomatoes in Coconut - Kerala Special
I know I know. This is the umpteenth time I am posting thoran in here but trust me this is slightly different. I mean, the basic recipe is the same but the main ingredient is not something you would have tried before.
Here it is: pacha thakkali thoranFor the basic recipe, please click here. Just change the main ingredient to raw green tomatoes to get the above dish.
The dish tastes very different from the normal ones that we have simply because the tomatoes give out a nice sour flavour. Make sure that you choose raw green tomatoes (and not the Bangalore tomatoes). I don't know about the availability of these outside India.
Dish prepared by : my mom :) So all credit goes to her. I am so happy I can send this across as my contribution to 'Fresh Produce of the Month' Event, hosted by ChemCookIt. I just took a picture when amma made this while I was home on vacation. Never thought I could share :)

ReplyDeleteI've never had thoran, wish I could taste. Mom's food is always the best! My parents love having their cooking featured on the blog!! They always ask me now "Aren't you going to take a picture for the blog?"

Nags, never had thoran this looks so delicious
ReplyDeleteHey Nags, love this recipe! I make a thoran or a mezhukuparatti almost every other day but I've never made a thoran using this. I am bookmarking this one. I am surprised that it didn't turn all mushy though.
ReplyDeleteI will let you know soon.
Thank you! And thanks to your mom too:-)
Yum! I love tomatoes, but my family usually grows red tomatoes.
ReplyDeleteYour dish looks yummy... I like to make an achar with it.
ReplyDeleteMy first time here (I think?). Neat looking thoran. I bet the tangy green tomatoes give this a nice kick. We do get a relative of green tomatoes in the western world called tomatillos, from Mexico. They are just a tad tangier. I think I'll try this with those :)

Hey Nags!
ReplyDeleteSorry I missed BOTH your emails! In any case, the dish looks delicious. I read the basic recipe you have a link for, and I wonder what you substitute the tomatoes with. Do you still have the coconut? I'd be curious to know exactly which ingredients you have in this version.. I'm still very ignorant about Indian cooking!
Thanks a lot - and I'll add your entry to the roundup right now. :)
We would like to feature this recipe on our blog. Please email sophiekiblogger@gmail.com if interested. Thanks :)
